Button Noir by Scyphi Button Noir by Scyphi
"The dame was hysterical. Dames usually are. But it meant I had a case, and the sound of bits slapping across my hoof is music to my ears any day. After all, I'm Button Mash. I'm a professional snoop..."

My entry for :iconmlp-atg-alumni: and the theme for this week, Pony Film Noir / Hardboiled Ponies. I've never done stereotypical noir-like art before, so I couldn't pass this one up. :D Used Button because the propeller hat is silly in noir-style, and because I was thinking of and referring to Bill Watterson's own Tracer Bullet storyarcs from Calvin and Hobbes and Button fit the ticket. That and I was looking to do some Button fan art anyway, so why not?

I had thought about fitting Sweetie Belle as "the dame" in there and maybe a mustache (for obvious reasons), but I had wanted to keep things simple and another character would've pushed it over the edge, and I'd worried the mustache wouldn't be seen given the lighting.

Not as long as you'd think, two to three hours tops if I remember correctly...not usually in the habit of timing myself, but somewhere in there. Basically all I did was sketch out the outlines in Photoshop, then on a separate layer used the pen tool to create the black contrast. Once done with that I just insured there was a solid white background behind it all, and viola!

It's really not all that hard if you understand shading and lighting, which apparently I have a better grasp of than I had previously thought if this pic has anything to say about it. :P

Neat. I love the stark shading and use of negative space, and Button Mash as a hard-boiled private eye, complete with bubble pipe and propeller beanie? That's too funny. :)

And Tracer Bullet references? Yes, please! Any plans to turns this into a series?

Guess that means I'm doing it right. :D

As for a series, I'd be lying if I didn't say the thought hasn't crossed my mind, but unfortunately I can't spare the time to do one at present. :(

Still, I'll file that idea away. Maybe, some day in the future, I can come back and do a series. :)
